PRESS RELEASE

Smoke extraction tests at the new ECB premises

1 July 2014

In coming weeks the European Central Bank (ECB) will be carrying out several tests on the fire safety system at its new premises in Frankfurt am Main. The first of these tests is scheduled for Wednesday, 2 July.

During the tests, artificial smoke may be seen to be escaping from the Grossmarkthalle and the office tower. This smoke is not hazardous to health. Such tests must be carried out prior to the commissioning of every new high-rise to ensure that the smoke extraction mechanisms are fully functional. The remaining tests will be carried out over the next few weeks.

Since its establishment in 1998 the ECB has rented office space. The move to its own new premises is planned for the end of the year.
